BPAY Group innovations connect with FinTechs at Intersekt Festival

- By Keith Brown
It had been 16 months since I had been on a plane, let alone attended a conference so, it was with a lot of excitement, and a certain amount of nervousness, that I headed to Melbourne in May to attend Intersekt, the annual FinTech Industry Conference.

Thankfully there were no travel restrictions in place and other than the inconvenience of mask wearing, the trip was smooth and uneventful.

Now in its fifth year, we have been a long-term supporter of Intersekt and stepped up to be a major sponsor of this year’s festival, and it was great to see our brand displayed prominently across the conference.

Our reason for wanting to be part of this exciting event is due to FinTech being the industry where amazing innovation is happening. BPAY has already seen firsthand how keen FinTechs are to gain access to our technology with over 1,000 users having accessed our API sandbox, and nearly 70 going live in production.

It was with this knowledge that we were keen to better understand the FinTech environment, and connect with both existing and future partners.

There were certainly many familiar faces, but also a huge wealth of new ideas and opportunities. There was a lot of interest in Open Banking and CDR, with a number of sessions focusing on the potential opportunities in the space.

A lot of conversations focused on collaboration and partnerships, particularly how start-ups could work with more established players in the market. This was the theme of our panel session on day two when Head of Product and Experience, Jon White, discussed integration to our APIs with representatives from Beem It, Deferit and Groupee.

In our Roundtable discussion earlier in the day I talked with around 30 attendees about how BPAY became a purpose led organisation, and the huge benefits that this has had on our culture and products.

It was great to hear Sniip talk about the huge benefits they have achieved in integrating with BPAY, and how they have enabled their customers to use their American Express cards to make BPAY payments.

It was also great to be back meeting people in person and having the opportunity to connect with people from across the FinTech spectrum.

A very worthwhile experience for BPAY Group, and I look forward to being able to do it all again next year.
