Delivering improvements to the reconciliation of bulk payments

BPAY Group, a leader in bill payments in Australia continues to deliver innovative services to the industry through the release of a new set of APIs which can improve the processing and receipt of bulk payments at Council. 

BPAY APIs enable business customers to validate BPAY payment information and have been developed in response to requests for easier access to that information. 

Businesses that currently make bulk payments to Council with a remittance advice, may become a BPAY Batch Payer and use BPAY APIs to validate bulk BPAY Payments through the “Generate BPAY Batch File”^ API. As well as creating the Batch Payer file in their required bank format*, the API validates BPAY Customer Reference Numbers. 

The use of “Generate BPAY Batch File”^ API (by business customers) will enable councils to receive more payments via BPAY, improving accuracy, enabling automated reconciliation and eliminating the need to manually check information from remittance advices. 

The BPAY team will be pleased to assist your business customers become a BPAY Batch Payer improving their processes, impacting the quality of payment information received by councils. 

We recommend that councils experiencing challenges around the receipt of bulk payments that are difficult to reconcile, make contact with their relationship banking manager to organise a presentation with the BPAY Business Development team. Alternatively, contact BPAY directly by lodging an expression of interest via the BPAY website at 

Future releases of APIs are planned to further enhance the service delivered to and by the Local Government sector. 

^The Generate BPAY Batch API can be used to create a batch file which is submitted to the financial institution to make BPAY Payments. BPAY Payments cannot be made through Generate BPAY Batch API. Batch Payments are governed by separate arrangements with financial institutions. 
* Bankwest, Commonwealth Bank, Macquarie Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac offer BPAY Batch Payments.
